Equator Monument, Ecuador
The
monument at "Mitad del Mundo" (middle of the Earth) celebrates
the scientific expedition that established the location of the equator
at this spot, in Ecuador, early in the 18th century. It's just a
short drive north of Quito, the South American nation's capital.
That red line you see is the equator itself, geographic girdle of
the world.
